Helping Hands for Hornsey Trust
Children returning from their October half-term break to The Hornsey Trust specialist school in Muswell Hill were greeted with new-look classrooms thanks to WellChild's Helping Hands project and two teams of willing volunteers from Barclays London and Southern Community Relations Team (iincluding a group from Poole) and from Thomson Reuters. The Hornsey Trust runs the only specialist centre and school in the London region for children with cerebral palsy.
Lee Trunks, our Helping Hands Project Manager explains: “Our Helping Hands scheme has transformed the daily lives of many children and young people through a variety of practical, hands-on projects. When I visited The Hornsey Trust in the summer, I saw it was a unique project for us and allowed to accommodate lots of people to make a real difference to the children at The Hornsey Trust.
“We were able to complete so much over the two days and the quality of work was superb. It has been a great project to work on and we hope that the Hornsey Trust and all the pupils enjoy their made over rooms for years to come.”
Julia Stanger-France is Head of Fundraising at The Hornsey Trust and has a nine-year-old daughter in Key Stage 2 at the school. She added: “It is always special when companies offer their staff time to help in the community. We really appreciate WellChild, Barclays and Thomson Reuters’ support, especially in this difficult financial climate. We are over the moon with our transformed school!”
De-clutter with Clothes Aid for WellChild
WellChild is in partnership with Clothes Aid to raise funds through the doorstep collection of clothes and textiles for re-use and recydling. With an average of between 75% and 90% of the proceeds of donations coming to WellChild this is a fantastic opportunity to have a clear out of clothes and textiles and help us to help sick children and their families. Watch out for the collection bags and tags!
Challenge News Round-Up
Northern Soles

WellChild's team of 24 runners got their trainers on and pounded the course of the Bupa Great North Run on 5th October. All commented on the great atmosphere and the buzz around the course on the day. They were ceratinly helped along not only by the cheering crowds but also by the glorious autumn weather.
Wellchild Events Manager Laura Bailey and her brother Barry were each carrying a little extra weight. A stone each to be precise, as they were wearing the WellChild Hands costumes throughout the run. Being interviewed live on the BBC gave Laura a great opportunity to spread the word about WellChild, and she and Barry finished the course in a cracking time of 2 hours, 39 minutes!. Our team are on target to raise a fantastic £7,500 so a big thank-you to everyone involved.
A landmark run

Twelve WellChild runners completed the Berlin Marathon this year. Whilst none can claim to have helped push Gabri Salasi to his new World Record, they all enjoyed the experience of running through one of Europe's greatest cities.
Plane Crazy

Perfect conditions were the order of the day on 26th September when four brave souls joined the Red Devils Parachute Display Team to skydive for WellChild. Amit Kotecha, Tom Bates, Clive Bates and Ang Cromwell decided to throw themselves out of a plane at 14,000 feet, reaching speeds of up to 140mph on the way down! Supported by the WellChild team on the ground, they all found it an exhilarating experience. Keep checking our challenge pages if you fancy freefalling into the next Flyday.
